Visual artist from Sancti Spíritus gifts an exibition to Cuban Culture Day

The exhibition *Retazos* (Scraps)—subtitled “fragments that build a whole”—by visual artist Rafael González Morales, will open on October 20th at the Hotel Plaza gallery in Sancti Spíritus.

“This exhibition was created using scraps—leftovers, small bits of canvas, and pieces of wood salvaged from old doors to make frames. It wasn’t originally intended for exhibition; it was just about creating, about keeping myself active,” the artist explains.

“When I saw how many pieces had come together, *Retazos* was born. The underlying message is that great things can be achieved from small elements. My goal is to stay creative—to keep making things. Even from materials I thought couldn’t possibly yield art, art emerged.”

A year later—on a date of great significance for Cuba—this native of Sancti Spíritus returns to a venue that exists outside the formal institutional network of the cultural sector.

“The Hotel Plaza is a very welcoming space; it’s frequented by many people, which gives the works greater visibility. I don’t like confining art to a traditional gallery; this is an open, public space. The management at the Hotel Plaza is professional and takes good care of the pieces.”

Throughout his career, each of Rafael González Morales’s creative projects has demonstrated his ongoing growth and his commitment to his core artistic identity. “Many people have said to me, ‘Hey, this is a departure from your usual work.’ I don’t see that as a negative—rather, it’s an opportunity to explore other fields.”
