Biodiversity sanctuaries enrich Sancti Spíritus

The growth and consolidation of the Provincial System of Protected Areas, with a total of 13, confirms the quality of the spiritual environmental work carried out in the protection of biodiversity.
Although the territory does not have the highest category of natural resource management and protection, which is identified as a Nature Reserve, it does have the second category of National Park, and the goal is for Lomas de Banao to become the second in Sancti Spiritus, in addition to Caguanes.
CITMA’s Deputy Environment Delegate, Néstor Álvarez Cruz, explains.
“In a sense, we’ve worked on seven management plans, four that have already been submitted and three that are in progress.
There are, however, two new areas in the province that are in the process of completing their applications, which would increase the total to two more areas, bringing the total to 15. We could bring the province to 17.
We have 17 approved areas within the system, and we have two more defined areas that are still unmanaged.
This result of the consolidation of the Provincial System of Protected Areas influenced Sancti Spiritus to be chosen as the host of the main activities in honor of World Environment Day.
