Nurses from Sancti Spíritus: hands that work miracles

Every morning at the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital in Sancti Spíritus, an army of white coats defies exhaustion and limitations. They are the nurses of Sancti Spíritus, silent protagonists of a daily epic: guaranteeing care, tenderness, and life amidst one of the most acute resource crises the health sector has faced on the island.

“We lack everything from gloves to basic antibiotics, sometimes even water for patient hygiene, but here, no one abandons their post,” confesses Yudelis Pérez, a registered nurse with 18 years of experience. Her testimony encapsulates the feelings of the more than 3,000 professionals in this specialty in the province, who work with resterilized bandages, syringes reused after rigorous processes, and an ingenuity that borders on the heroic.

The shortage of supplies is no secret to anyone. Long lines at pharmacies, shortages of painkillers, and frequent breakdowns of electrical equipment due to a lack of spare parts are the daily reality. However, nurses have transformed adversity into a creative battleground: they manage solutions with their own hands, build support networks among families, and train patients in self-care to make the most of every resource.
