As part of the national strategy to reduce the number of people infected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in Cuba, more than 60 patients in the country are now receiving PrEP, a drug designed to reduce the chances of infection by more than 90% in people exposed to the virus.

According to psychologist Elvis Julio Rodríguez Fimia, head of the Provincial Department of Health Promotion and Education (Prosalud), this pharmacological option, introduced more than a year ago in the territory, is available for key population groups, namely men who have sex with men, transsexuals and those who practice transactional sex.

The therapy -he clarified- is provided free of charge to patients who come to the pre-exposure prophylaxis service available only at the North Polyclinic, in the city of Sancti Spiritus, on a weekly basis (Wednesdays, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.).
