National Award of the Academy of Sciences Presented in Sancti Spíritus

The Sancti Spíritus Provincial Meteorological Center and Grethel Sieiro Miranda—leader of the project “Bioclimatic Zoning for the Sustainability of Agricultural and Livestock Production in Sancti Spíritus Province, Cuba”—officially received the 2025 National Award from the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

“It is an honor for me to have received this award and for the research I lead to have earned such national recognition; however, it also presents a challenge, as it requires that the subsequent phase of the research—which will extend to other provinces—maintain the necessary high standards,” noted the young meteorologist from Sancti Spíritus.

She also explained that leading a team where most members are older and more experienced is complex; this provides her with new tools, turning the honor into a challenge. Research rigor cannot be compromised, especially since, based on these results, the project is set to expand across the entire central region.

These awards aim to encourage Cuban science to increasingly serve as a driving force for societal progress.

Elaine Plasencia Alfonso, a member of the Provincial Party Bureau, emphasized the need to bring this research to the attention of decision-makers. The goal is to leverage science to boost food production—focusing on strategic crops—not only within the province but throughout the country’s central region as the project is implemented.

The ceremony was attended by executives and specialists from the Provincial Meteorological Center, the José Martí Pérez University of Sancti Spíritus, and the Provincial Delegation of Science, Technology, and the Environment—led by its delegate, Miguel Eduardo García Ruiz—as well as Enrique Pérez Cruz, president of the Academy of Sciences’ provincial branch and director of the province’s Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
