Sancti Spíritus consolidates “Tarea Vida” actions
As part of *Tarea Vida* (Task Life), the Sancti Spíritus region is consolidating a series of actions aimed at environmental care and preservation.
Néstor Álvarez Cruz, the provincial Deputy Delegate for the Environment at CITMA, outlined the measures focused on environmental advancement: “*Tarea Vida* has been underway in the region since 2017. There are three areas of national interest—including the settlements of Tunas de Zaza and Médano, which are threatened by the risk of permanent flooding, as well as the southern plains of La Sierpe and Sancti Spíritus.
“We have a large number of sites there that will be affected by saltwater inundation; this primarily concerns the Sur del Jíbaro Agro-industrial Grain Enterprise, where soil quality—and consequently rice production—will be impacted, thereby affecting food security. Work has been ongoing on a project involving photovoltaic and other forms of energy; the plan involves extracting saline water and mixing it with water from the reservoir to convert it into fresh water.”
Several projects are also being carried out on the Ancón Peninsula, an area of provincial interest. “Work was done for the opening of the Trinidad Península Hotel, which entailed the creation of a small artificial beach. A set of measures is also being maintained regarding beach upkeep and the protection of lagoons and vegetation. That area is included in the national beach improvement plan. Currently, the project is on hold due to the country’s situation, but also because the necessary sand for the process has not yet been found.”
