Two students from Sancti Spíritus will represent Cuba at the International Chemistry Olympiad

Two twelfth grade students from the Eusebio Olivera Rodríguez Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences in Sancti Spíritus, Ernesto Alejandro Barrera and Leticia María Merlo, will represent Cuba at the 60th Mendeleev International Chemistry Olympiad (IMChO-60) in Moscow.

The competition will take place from April 15 to 23 at Lomonosov Moscow State University, which will host talented young chemists from dozens of countries, including Cuba.

According to Dunierki Díaz Medina, MSc, director of the Sancti Spíritus Vocational Institute, it is an honor for the institution and the province that two students from Sancti Spíritus will represent the country at this event. These young people, along with their mentor, Orestes Eduardo Landrove Ramírez, MSc, from Las Tunas, will do Cuba proud at the International Chemistry Olympiad.

The source added that this participation is possible thanks to the support of the IMChO and a joint effort by the Ministry of Education, the Chemistry Society, teachers, coaches, and families, with special recognition for the work done in our province.

The students began their preparation in August with online training and self-study; then, the experimental phase took place at the University of Sancti Spíritus and later continued at the Eduardo García Delgado School, where the pre-selection laboratory is currently located, prior to their departure for Russia this Monday, April 13.
