Cuban biotechnology products maintain stability in Sancti Spíritus pharmacies

The now stable presence of four Cuban biopharmaceutical products in the pharmacy network of Sancti Spíritus province marks a significant step forward in providing the population with access to high-tech medications, in addition to replacing costly imports.

According to Lady Marian Rodríguez Rodríguez, technical director of the Provincial Pharmacy and Optical Company, the consolidation of these drugs in the province is the result of a gradual distribution that now guarantees greater coverage and stability in dispensing.

“These include pregnancy test strips and proctokinase suppositories containing recombinant streptokinase, which are used in the treatment of acute hemorrhoidal disease. Compared to other commonly used medications for this condition, we have seen better therapeutic results, as they reduce inflammation, perianal pain, and rectal bleeding in a very short time.” We also have Nasalferon, which contains recombinant human alpha-2-beta interferon and is used as an antiviral and immunomodulator; that is, it is used in the treatment and prophylaxis of acute respiratory infections.”

In addition to the aforementioned medications, Hebermin, a 30-gram cream indicated for the treatment of bedsores and burns, is also available, making it a widely used therapeutic option. “It contains silver sulfadiazine and epidermal growth factor and is used in the treatment of thermal, hypodermic, superficial, and deep burns. It is used in the treatment and prevention of bedsores, and also in the treatment of ulcers caused, for example, by peripheral venous insufficiency, in the treatment of lesions caused by radiotherapy, and also by exposure to other types of radiation, such as solar radiation. With summer approaching, we often overexpose ourselves to the sun, which also causes significant and serious skin damage.”

Three of these four products require a prescription, and their availability in pharmacies throughout the country is significant in the current context, as it expands treatment options.

“They are very important because, while they can replace other medications, they are also the only ones in our basic formulary that can be used for some of these conditions. In the case of pregnancy test strips, they are available without a prescription. The other three we were talking about do require a prescription.”
