Paper, between the art of communication and living memory

Paper was invented in China in the 2nd century, during the Han Dynasty, specifically by Ts’ai Lun, who perfected a process for making a writing surface from plant fibers.

This invention transformed writing, making it more accessible and durable. It spread from scribes and Buddhist monks to the rest of the world, becoming an essential material for education, bureaucracy, and culture.
