New generation of tobacco farmers on the Viñas farm
On the Viña family farm, nestled in the municipality of Taguasco in Sancti Spíritus province, the nearly century-old tobacco-growing tradition continues with the sun-on-the-stick system.
Amidst the hustle and bustle, we find young Yunier González Viña, who tells us about the significance of continuing to cultivate this exportable crop for the Cuban economy.
“I like this plant. I’m no novice; this is my sixth season. I’m drawn to this crop, and it’s been successful. It brings in money, and that helps the economy. You prepare. This year there was little rain, but a good downpour came, the reservoir was full, and I took advantage of it and planted like crazy. Now I’m going to irrigate again, and then I’ll be able to eliminate the pests. Afterward, it’s free of unwanted insects. So far, the field is healthy.”
Regarding the selected variety, he points out: “Mine is Sancti Spíritus 96, it provides good leaves, is heavy in the selection and is resistant to diseases, although my brother, who has just started in tobacco, uses Corojo 2020, a new variety that is already very popular, because it provides many leaves, up to 24, and that is excellent for achieving high yields.”
