Wetlands: green lungs and natural shields

Wetlands: green lungs and natural shields

Every February 2nd, World Wetlands Day is commemorated, marking the signing of the Ramsar Convention in 1971 and underscoring the need to protect these vital ecosystems for life on the planet.

Wetlands are spaces where water and land intertwine, unique habitats that regulate the hydrological cycle, store carbon, and act as natural barriers against extreme events such as hurricanes and storm surges. In Cuba, these ecosystems cover more than 1.4 million hectares, representing approximately 13 percent of the national territory. Their importance transcends the environmental: they are sources of sustenance, culture, and tradition for numerous communities.
