Tribute to Conrado Benítez in the mountains of Trinidad

With the presence of Naima Ariatne Trujillo Barreto, Minister of Education, a national ceremony was held to honor Conrado Benítez García, the first victim of terrorism against teachers in the mountains of Trinidad, who was murdered 65 years ago.

The tribute took place at the Rural Basic Secondary School that bears the brigadista’s name, located in the mountain community of Pitajones. Among those attending the commemoration were Deivy Pérez Martín, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and its First Secretary in Sancti Spíritus; Alexis Lorente Jiménez, Governor of the province; and other provincial and municipal leaders.

At the Las Tinajitas farm, in the San Ambrosio area, palm trees and coffee plants mourned the death of the 18-year-old from Matanzas. However, the crime raised the banners of example and, at Fidel’s call, thousands of young people from all over the island, primer and lantern in hand, starred in the Literacy Campaign.
