The neonatology service in Sancti Spíritus consolidates its position in the protection of life

The Sancti Spíritus Provincial Neonatology Service, recognized as one of the best in the country, cared for more than two thousand newborns in 2025, a result that confirms the scale of its work and the specialists’ commitment to infant survival and the care of critical cases.

According to Midalis Martínez, head of the service, approximately 80% of babies born in the province during the last twelve months received care at the unit, demonstrating the system’s coverage and responsiveness, as well as the fact that it handles the majority of births in the province.

“As usual, we have had to face the arboviral epidemic. There have been around 2,500 births in the province. We have attended to approximately 2,000 of these births at the provincial maternity hospital, all of these patients in different settings within the neonatology service. The specialist emphasized that the center not only guarantees basic care but also intensive care for newborns with low birth weight, respiratory complications, or other critical conditions, which consolidates its role as a pillar in reducing infant mortality in Sancti Spíritus.”

“This year, we have been hit hard by prematurity and this arboviral epidemic. We have had around 20 patients with suspected cases of the disease, for whom the doctors’ work has had to be redoubled because it has been necessary to reorganize the service’s work, with 24-hour shifts every other day. The weight of the work and service falls on the nursing staff, who are the backbone of the service, and they too have had to work 24-hour shifts every other day.”

Martínez Barrios also highlighted the high incidence of teenage pregnancies in 2025, a reality that is concerning due to its implications for the health of mothers and babies and that demands greater community involvement in prevention.

The Sancti Spíritus Provincial Neonatology Service closed 2025 having cared for more than two thousand newborns, demonstrating the scale of its work and the commitment of its specialists to ensuring infant survival and providing care for critical cases, thus solidifying its position as a national leader in protecting life.
