The Earth: Protagonist of Israel Rondón’s Aesthetic Discourse
“The earth is my memory; it is my expression.” The work of artist Israel Rondón Mainegra overflows with spirituality and energy. In it, the earth takes center stage—both in his aesthetic vision and in the life of “Papito,” as he is known in the city of Trinidad—a life defined by constant experimentation.
“It is a process of experimentation, a process of searching, a process of finding spiritual satisfaction; it is a process that brings both applause and mistakes. There are supporters and, of course, detractors, but above all, it is a process of professional exchange, respect, and seriousness.”
It was within this creative quest that, two years ago, he conceived the *Tierranza* project, aiming to elevate a material abundant in Trinidad—one rich in diverse textures and tones. “This material is part of my history and my heritage; it comes from my city and my own artistic training. Elevating it is like rescuing—or adding value to—a key element of my identity. That is why I feel such a connection to the earth: both for its natural qualities and for what it represents regarding who I am.”
“I can apply the academic skills I acquired during my training and experiment with various techniques and materials. These allow me to work across different mediums—whether drawing, murals, sculpture, or even performance art. That is why the earth will continue to be the central element of my artistic work.”
