Sugar producers contribute to recovery efforts in Santiago de Cuba
Workers from the Melanio Hernández company, based in Tuinucú, Sancti Spíritus, have joined the cleanup and sanitation efforts in Santiago de Cuba as part of the recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa. This was confirmed by Antonio Viamonte, director of the sugar company.
“They left for the eastern provinces, specifically Santiago de Cuba, in what we call a special convoy of cane harvesters,” Viamonte explained. “These are the harvesters we commonly use for cane picking. They really play a vital role in these times and in these kinds of events. Seven workers, two harvesters, two trucks, and a vehicle with a mechanic and a supervisor have already departed for the eastern provinces. That’s five vehicles from Melanio Hernández heading there.”
