When the energy situation worsened and cooking with electricity and other fuels became more complicated, Nelson Ríos, a farmer, didn’t hesitate: he decided to use the remaining marabou weed on his farm, La Espinita, near the community of Júcaro in Yaguajay, as the raw material for producing charcoal.

It wasn’t the commercialization of this plant-based fuel that motivated him, but rather “to guarantee what my family and some neighbors need, and to help someone in an emergency,” he stated.
