Pediatric clinic in Sancti Spíritus resumes laparoscopic gallbladder surgery

After several years of being halted due to a lack of resources and qualified personnel, the Sancti Spíritus Provincial Pediatric Hospital resumed minimally invasive gallbladder surgeries on Wednesday for patients suffering from gallstones, a less invasive technique that reduces recovery time.

According to Dr. Ramón Aquino Lorenzo, director of the aforementioned hospital, this marks an advance in pediatric surgical care in the province by reducing postoperative complications.

“With the collaboration of the surgical team at the Santa Espiritu Provincial Hospital, the General Directorate of Health, and the surgeons here at the Santa Espiritu Pediatric Hospital, we are resuming minimally invasive gallbladder surgeries, which are performed on the same day as outpatients. This minimally invasive surgery allows patients to return home, with minimal discomfort and a very rapid recovery.” Of the 15 children who were patients since 2020, they now receive this type of surgery here in our province or in the neighboring province of Villaclara, which is our regional referral center. Today, the first five children began surgery here, and children over 15 are now receiving it.

According to Aquino Lorenzo, the reactivation of this type of surgery is a response to the addition of new specialists and the launch of a new surgical unit by the end of 2024.
