Nilka Díaz: The teacher is a psychologist
A new school year has begun in Cuba, a time that once again highlights the commitment of teachers, families, and students. Nilka Díaz de Dios, a retired educator with over 40 years of experience, remains actively involved in supporting the children in her community.
How did you welcome the start of the school year?
Well, we welcomed the start of this school year—which has very different characteristics from others—by staying informed via television about the guidance provided by the Minister of Education. Her words were very encouraging, especially given the difficult times we are in; we need to reach out to children, families, the community, and everyone around us in new and different ways.
What feelings does this time of year stir in you?
It stirs a feeling that makes me wish I were young again, so I could have the energy to contribute even more during these critical times. I have experience that I could apply in various ways, but we must look beyond the present and think about the future—recognizing that while we are living through critical moments, and others may lie ahead, things can also improve.
That is why we must give our all—with love, affection, and dedication—solving problems with the resources we have, while maintaining a positive attitude and a good rapport with the community, parents, grandparents, and all the staff involved with the children at school.
