Valley of the Sugar Mills

It is located southwest of the province of Sancti Spíritus and northeast of the city of Trinidad. The valley was first used in the 17th century for cattle ranching, and tobacco cultivation along the banks of the Agabama and Caracusey rivers made it an important trading area on the island. The arrival of Spanish immigrants from Jamaica around 1650, bringing sugar production technology and favorable growing conditions (fertile land, large irrigation rivers, and nearby shipping ports), soon made the sugar industry the most important in the region, displacing others to the extent that it was practical to discontinue them.

Manaca-Iznaga

The monumental complex includes the main house, the bell tower, the warehouse, the blacksmith’s kitchen, the slave quarters, and the infirmary. Its most famous feature, and one of the most important elements of the valley and Trinidad, is the tower, a majestic building standing 43.5 meters tall, a testament to the region’s significance.
