Jesús González and the Sancti Spíritus Music Band

Sancti Spiritus will celebrate the twenty-seventh edition of its Band Gathering on Thursday, August 14th.
Today marks the 91st anniversary of Jesús María González Pérez’s birth, and this gathering is dedicated to him.
Born on August 11, 1934, into a musical family, his grandparents, mother, and sister were piano teachers in this city.
Although as a child he tried to follow the path of his father, a master bricklayer, in the end, for the good of our culture, he responded to the call of the music that ran through his veins.
Jesús González became a musician, and at just 15 years old, he performed at his first dance in the town of Arroyo Blanco, accompanying the important Sancti Spiritus troubadour Juan Manuel Puig.
Although he always leaned toward studying the trumpet, the inability to afford that instrument forced him to learn the piano. Thus, out of necessity, he became the harmonic foundation that every good musician must possess and that comes from mastery of the keyboard and music theory.
Jesús, in addition to being an active member of UNEAC, traveled our city in the daily hustle and bustle of new projects. Once a danzón orchestra, later the Children’s Music Band, one of his most beautiful ideas.
Every Sunday, in the cool mornings that invite family outings, at national events and commemorations, for over 120 years, the Music Band has been a prestigious cultural event.
At the forefront, confident and impassive, guiding musicians of different generations with his talent and experience, was maestro Jesús González, that essential figure in Sancti Spiritus culture. The Provincial Band Meeting to be held in Sancti Spiritus rightfully bears his name.
