How much can agroecology contribute to food sovereignty?

According to Decree No. 128 on Agroecology, the Ministry of Agriculture must facilitate access to appropriate technologies for agricultural production. Despite this legislation, it is regrettable that, to date, the Ministry’s institutions in these areas have done little to offer technical assistance or advance the dissemination of information and knowledge necessary to achieve a major transformation of agricultural culture, such as agroecology. Agroecology contributes science and innovation through its traditional systems that generate biocultural heritage.

To date, agroecological issues within the agricultural sector are relegated to congresses and scientific and technical forums, while only conventional agricultural systems, dependent on expensive imported inputs that are nearly impossible to access, receive attention. This occurs even as our government demands increased domestic food production and import substitution.

Agroecology should no longer be seen as a mere alternative because there are no resources, but as a resilient, sustainable and sovereign transformation model.
