Female empowerment among goats in Yaguajay

Together with five other women, Leticia weaves a silent epic: transforming stables into trenches of female empowerment.
Four years ago, this land was just a fledgling project of the Caguanes Basic Cooperative Production Unit (UBPC). Today, under the auspices of the ALASS (Local Self-Sufficiency for Sustainable and Healthy Food) project, it has become a work haven for rural women.
Many arrived from communities where there were almost no decent employment options. “We started with two companions, but today we are six warriors,” says Leticia as she strokes a goat’s back.
Her voice resonates like a manifesto in the context of the National Program for the Advancement of Women, which seeks to break down historical barriers and encapsulates the sentiment and political will of the Cuban state.
