Díaz-Canel: Cuba is waging a new Moncada

President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez opened his remarks at the National Main Event commemorating July 26th by conveying a message from Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution. Raúl stated: “Dear people of Pinar del Río, on this July 26th, please accept my affection and recognition for having earned—through your effort, dedication to the cause, and creative work—the great honor of hosting the main event marking the 73rd anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks.”

Díaz-Canel contextualized the commemoration within the present day, asserting that “Cuba is waging a historic battle today—a new Moncada.”

He drew a parallel between the feat of 1953 and the current struggle against the blockade: “Just as the Centennial Generation charged against the walls of two barracks armed with nothing but simple rifles, we—the current generations—are taking on the walls of a notorious policy that seeks to suffocate the entire population in order to seize the country.”
