When it comes to tobacco, Onel is no ordinary producer

During the current tobacco season, Onel Pérez Domínguez—a tobacco grower from Taguasco—demonstrated his status as an outstanding producer in the Santa Rosa area, where he has upheld the best of his family’s nearly century-old tradition of sun-grown, pole-cured tobacco farming.

Regarding quality, the young tobacco grower explains: “The quality is wonderful; I have no damaged tobacco. The curing process in the barn went very well; the entire harvest consists of top-quality leaves suitable for export. This year, I planted a new variety: Criollo 2018. For many years, I grew the Sancti Spíritus 2006 variety, but I switched, and this new one has been phenomenal, delivering higher yields. It appears more robust, is highly suited to our area, and resists pests and diseases. There were no issues; the plants grew vigorously, and the leaves developed well. We aimed to harvest fifteen leaves while ensuring size and quality, yet there was an abundance of leaves. I find it excellent for our ‘sun-grown’ (*sol en palo*) cultivation method.”

As for plans for the upcoming season, he stated: “I have already contracted for more acreage. We’ve seen the economic benefits of this tobacco, which has performed much better this year. The foreign currency incentive system is very favorable. I already have part of the land in good condition. Fuel supplies have started to arrive, which is essential for all operations. If we can secure enough fuel, I expect even better results from the new plantings.”

This production contribution is crucial amidst the country’s difficult economic situation, as the Taguasco-based entity nears its production targets and maintains its momentum in revitalizing this key export commodity of the national economy.
