Sancti Spíritus for greater use of renewable energy in the face of fuel shortage

Promoting the use of renewable energy to ensure the continuity of essential services in the municipalities of Sancti Spíritus is one of the province’s strategies in response to the worsening fuel shortage in the country and the province in particular.

In addition to the recent installation of two-kilowatt solar systems in health centers, schools, bank and electricity branches, funeral homes, radio stations and Radio Cuba transmitters, as well as isolated homes and those of workers in priority sectors, various entities have begun using electric equipment to guarantee their own services. More electric vehicles have also been added for passenger transport, and electric cars for transporting cargo and people.

According to Camilo Pérez Pérez, Coordinator of Programs and Objectives for the Provincial Government, these actions have impacted electricity generation and reduced fuel consumption. “It must be noted that the province’s renewable energy generation capacity has increased considerably,” he stated. We are already aware of state-run bakeries, specifically those currently shut down, which should begin operating in the coming hours with energy independence, having previously relied on the electrical grid. This energy independence will benefit the public. There are also plans to further incorporate solar-powered systems into state-run bakeries, including those of the Food Company.

The territory’s goal is to continue promoting the use of renewable energy by various entities. Regarding transportation, many companies have also been incorporating electric tricycles. The Meat Industry recently received electric tricycles and is already transporting products from the provincial capital using them. Raw Materials also has electric tricycles. And there is a group of service providers that have been incorporating electric tricycles as part of a national policy. Efforts are underway to eliminate some of the procedures and obstacles that companies currently face when purchasing electric equipment, especially domestically produced tricycles.

According to the source, there are reserves in place to achieve lower electricity consumption among the population and in state and non-state centers located on non-interruptible circuits. “We maintain the directive and control over this. We cannot say today that we are at 100%, but it is important to note that a considerable number of entities have been responsible in this regard.”

“Some organizations close at midday, others disconnect their power on Thursday night so they don’t use energy on Friday, and some organizations in sheltered housing complexes are very responsible in high-demand neighborhoods. State management reports also show they have acted very seriously. We must continue working through municipal energy councils and continue instilling in the population the need to save energy.”
