Sancti Spíritus will close 2025 with birth rates increase
For the first time in the last 10 years, the province of Sancti Spíritus will manage to halt the sustained decline in the number of births when, by the end of 2025, it records an upswing in the birth rate, the result of intersectoral actions that strengthen maternity care and family protection.
According to Dr. Frank García González, head of the PAMI Maternal and Child Care Program at the Provincial Health Directorate, the most benefited municipalities are Sancti Spíritus, Fomento, and Jatibónico, which would mark a favorable turning point in the demographic trend in these territories.
“The increase in the birth rate was something long-awaited in the province. It had been more than 10 years since the province had exceeded the number of births from one year to the next. And based on what we have in our hospitals or the gestational chart, we know that this year we will end with over 2,495 births, around 2,600. Right now, this hospital is completely full; all the maternity wards, including the postpartum ward, are full. Throughout the entire year, we have never had both postpartum wards, that is, all 60 beds, plus the 15 for premature babies, full.
According to García González, this increase in pregnant women has forced the reorganization of spaces within the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital.
