Health surveillance strengthened to the first cases of chikungunya in Sancti Spíritus.
Sancti Spíritus is strengthening surveillance and control measures following the confirmation this month of the first three cases of chikungunya in the province, a disease caused by the alphavirus of the same name that is transmitted through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes.
According to Yurién Negrín Calvo, deputy director of epidemiology at the Provincial Hygiene Center, two of the cases were identified in the Sur and Banao areas of the provincial capital municipality, as well as in the Zaza area of Taguasco.
The deputy director of epidemiology at the Provincial Hygiene Center explained that the most common symptom of chikungunya is a sudden onset of fever, often accompanied by joint pain.
Given this situation, health authorities emphasize the need to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and to seek immediate medical attention if any fever-related symptoms occur.
