In the Escambray Mountains, in the province of Sancti Spíritus, lie the stories of women who have made the land, their families, and their communities with reason for living. This March 8th, International Women’s Day, it is essential to look towards these unsung heroes who, from the hills, sustain rural Cuba with effort and dignity.
Coffee, the region’s emblematic crop, has been a source of sustenance and pride for Escambray families for decades. At every stage of production, from planting to harvesting and processing, women play a vital role: their hands, calloused from work, select the beans, tend the plants, and pass on their accumulated knowledge to new generations.
